From France, this heavy glass brooch with a silver washed bezel measures 2-1/8" in diameter and weighs 1.2 ounces. Intaglio carving on backside of slightly domed citrine yellow glass represents Lady Liberty (French Revolution). What appears to a representation of a laurel wreath appears beneath the profile, and the initials CSR are next to the bridge of her nose.
This brooch is tied in with the beginning of the French Communist Party and was worn by party members. Art Deco in age and execution of design, the weight of the piece makes it more suitable for heavy suit or coat label, rather than a blouse.
